Project Overview

LateTape is inspired by a lifelong fascination with sound and recording. Early experiments with devices like the Yak Bak, a simple voice recorder, sparked a curiosity about capturing and manipulating audio.

LateTape is a minimalist tape-style loop recorder for iOS. Record up to 30 seconds of audio, then play it back on a virtual tape reel โ€” complete with oscilloscope visualization, speed control, and a scratch wheel that lets you scrub through the audio.

It is Audio Unit (AUv3) compatible, so it works as a plugin inside any AUv3-compatible host on iOS.

Core Features

  • Tape-style loop recorder with oscilloscope visualization
  • Variable speed control โ€” speed up or slow down the tape
  • Scratch wheel for manual scrubbing through audio
  • Audio Unit v3 (AUv3) compatible
  • Minimalist, beautifully designed interface

Design Process

The design was guided by the principle that less is more. The interface is intentionally sparse โ€” a large oscilloscope display, a single record button, a speed knob, and a scratch wheel. Nothing unnecessary.
